Make vs Zapier: choosing a platform for lead automation
October 18, 2026
Choose between Make and Zapier by testing the same sales workflow in both. The useful choice is the one your team can run, explain and maintain, not simply the platform advertising more integrations.
What you are comparing
Make connects applications through a visual workflow environment. Zapier also connects applications through automated workflows. The specific action you need matters more than the total number of apps in a catalogue.
LeadShortcut publishes this article and sells implementation services. The criteria below are our analysis, not a performance benchmark or a partnership with either provider.
Use one real enquiry as the test
Consider this sequence: a form submission arrives, the system checks whether the contact exists, creates or updates the record and alerts the salesperson. If a phone number is missing, the enquiry must remain visible for manual handling.
Draw the sequence before selecting software. Identify the information required at each step and the person responsible at the end. Then check whether each platform supports the necessary operations in the versions of the apps you actually use.
| Check | In Make | In Zapier |
|---|---|---|
| Form and CRM | Test receipt, lookup and update | Test the same three operations |
| Repeat contact | Verify an update without a duplicate | Verify the same outcome |
| Missing field | Define the fallback and notification | Define the fallback and notification |
| Temporary error | Inspect the record and recovery process | Inspect the record and recovery process |
| Cost | Estimate usage for this workflow | Estimate usage for the same workflow |
Look beyond the starting price
One enquiry can trigger multiple actions. Estimate a normal month and a busier month. Include contact lookups, updates, retries and external services. Check current billing units and plan terms; they are not automatically equivalent across platforms.
Budget maintenance time too. A changed form or CRM permission can require a workflow revision. Establish who receives the alert, where they inspect the error and how they prevent the same operation from running twice.
When each route makes sense
Try Make if your pilot shows that the visual arrangement helps your team understand and modify the process. Try Zapier if the required workflow and integrations are easier for the designated owner to operate there. These are context-specific decision rules, not universal rankings of ease or price.
If nobody can own the process, commissioned implementation may be more useful than another subscription. Evaluate LeadShortcut against the agreed service scope: integrations, documentation, failure handling and maintenance. A platform licence does not buy that work automatically.
